A Three-Day Artistic Journey
Wissam Script is a unique and expressive style of calligraphy that beautifully blends traditional letterforms with contemporary artistic techniques. To introduce artists and enthusiasts to this elegant script, Aesthetic Circle recently organized an intensive three-day calligraphy workshop designed to provide both foundational knowledge and practical hands-on experience.
The workshop was conducted by Shahzaib Bilal, an accomplished calligrapher with over 10 years of experience in traditional and modern calligraphy. With his deep understanding of letter structures and artistic composition, he guided participants step-by-step through the creative process of mastering the Wissam script.
During the three days, students were introduced to the core principles and structure of Wissam calligraphy. The workshop began with basic letter practice, where participants learned the fundamental strokes, proportions, and rhythm of the script. Once students developed confidence with the basics, the sessions moved toward advanced letter practice, helping them refine their control, balance, and flow.
Beyond lettering techniques, the workshop also focused on the complete artistic process behind calligraphic artworks. Participants were taught how to prepare a canvas for calligraphy, ensuring the surface was properly primed for painting. The instructor demonstrated color mixing techniques, helping students understand how to create harmonious palettes that enhance the visual impact of their calligraphy.
One of the most engaging parts of the workshop was learning the traditional method of making a Qalam (calligraphy pen). Students experienced how the right tool can significantly influence the character and beauty of each stroke. This hands-on practice deepened their appreciation for the craftsmanship involved in classical calligraphy.
The workshop also included lessons on calligraphic composition, where students explored how to arrange words and letters creatively within a space. They learned how balance, alignment, and spacing play an important role in transforming simple lettering into meaningful artwork.
The workshop concluded with a final artwork session, where participants applied everything they had learned throughout the three days. Each student created a complete calligraphy piece on canvas, combining the Wissam script, color techniques, and compositional principles. The final works reflected the creativity and progress achieved during the workshop.
Through this immersive experience, Aesthetic Circle aimed to promote the beauty of traditional calligraphy while encouraging artistic exploration. The workshop not only helped participants develop new skills but also inspired them to continue their journey in the timeless art of calligraphy.
